The history behind the famous Jefferson cup: Thomas Jefferson’s friend and teacher, George Wythe, passed away in 1806, willing him two silver cups . Preferring a more modern style, he set out to have them redesigned. So he sent them off to Virginia silversmith, John Letelier, instructing him to melt the cups and remake them into a more popular tumbler design. Eight low, round-bottomed cups were crafted and returned to Monticello by 1810. These cups were Jefferson’s family favorites. Certainly your family will love them, too!
